Slide 1: Essay Title
Slide 2: Areas I want to talk about
These will be my areas of focus throughout the dissertation.
Slide 3: Child Development
I large focus will be on the impact toys and play have on children. It is in fact a vital part of growing up and enables children to build on important emotional skills that are crucial to learn for their adult life. Between the ages of 0-5 the brains development is at its most rapid rate.
Slide 4:
Improves Communication - Through toys children can communicate feelings and thoughts they want to convey. Fantasy/Role play/Story telling
Develop Imagination - It allows them to create their own world in which they can become anything. Pretend play can also originate from real life experiences and act daily routines. Though can be drawn from fantasy themes like mermaids and dragons.
Enhances
Well being - a decline of play can
actually increase anxiety , depression and feelings of helplessness amoungst
children.
Build Social Skills - Social skills are very important as they have an effect on every aspect of a persons life. Games with rules such as board games and sports teaches children to follow rules and take turns and share.
Manage risk - Through some toys like skateboards, pogo sticks and skipping ropes children can learn the necessary skills to stay safe on their own and become more independent.
Learn Boundaries - Playing with toys can teach children how far they can go with things and learn when to stop.
Increase creativity - Playing with toys can help a child express themselves and find confidence to find their own sense of identity which will improve their self esteem. Being creative allows a person to have the freedom to explore, experiment and investigate.
I haven't got a lot of information on this at the moment but I think that this would also be an interesting path to go down. My boyfriends nephew has autism and said that I could spend some time with him and ask his mum questions about what toys he enjoys to play with. I did find out that he has a strong disliking towards toys that are characters from the television as it becomes quite confusing for him. Not just with autism but I would like to research into what colours can provoke different feelings.
Slide 6: Books I have been reading
Slide 7: Practical
The slide will show the toys that I have been making recently. My problem with is that because of the research that I have gathered I am feeling the pressure that this has to be perfect. For instance, I have read that different colours and can have different effects; therefore, I don't want to choose the wrong colours but then will they all work well together? Should I have a colour theme?
I will talk about my idea of making an activity pack for children and adults to do together to make their own sewn character with an activity book and sticker.
Slide 8: Continued idea
"Creative play allows children to experience familiar materials in a new unusual way." (from the make time 2 play site) An activity I feel would definitely support my topic. They can involve the whole family, all ages. Also, gives the opportunity for the parent to see the world through their children's eyes.
Using my love for making plush toys and my research I have an idea for my practical to create an activity kit for adults and children to do together. I thought I could make a character and cut out the parts and then together they can sew up the character and I would make a set of instructions. Also I thought it would be a good idea to make some other things to go into the pack such as stickers and activity sheets.
Slide 9: Practical
Another idea that I had was to create a set of posters that would represent my research. Because I am not just thinking about children I started searching for images of the brain as thats where it stems from. I came across these images, which gave me the idea to show how toys activate the brain and learn.
